Scope and content Lucy J. Webb's memoir describes her work as a Methodist missionary at Shanghai, China, from 1922 to 1943 and from 1946 to 1951. Webb describes Shanghai, Soochow, Chinese education, Confucian philosophy, the silk and hairnet industries, and uses for bamboo. She also discusses Chinese social life and culture, including cooking methods, child raising methods, marriage arrangements and ceremonies, medical care, and farming methods. Webb describes vacations to Korea and Peking in the 1920s, Saigon, Hong Kong, Japan, Cambodia, and the Philippines. Other topics include the political upheavals affecting China between 1921 and 1951, including a student revolt in Shanghai in 1925 and the Japanese invasion and occupation of Shanghai; the seven months Webb spent interned along with other foreigners and her return to the United States in 1943; the economic situation in China after World War II; and a description of Shanghai after the Communist takeover in May 1949.

Biographical noteLucy J. Webb was a Methodist missionary at Shanghai, China, from 1922 to 1943, and again from 1946 to 1951. She was interned along with other foreigners for seven months in 1943, after which she returned to the United States. She returned to Shanghai in 1946 and continued her work until she was expelled from mainland China in 1951.
